Smilie Memorial Elementary School
Bolton, VT

By 1998, due to lack of space at the existing three-classrom school building, the Bolton community was paying tuition for 50% of its students to attend elementary schools in adjacent towns. This caused severe restrictions on the remaining funds for operation of the Smilie Memorial School. Northern Architects designed a 12,200 square foot addition housing five classrooms, a multi-purpose room and a new kitchen. In addition, deficiencies in the existing building were corrected, allowing all of the Districts children to be educated in one building. Construction was completed in 1999.
